This might be an unconventional opinion, but I’ll say it anyway.
I won’t sugarcoat it.
Social media is NOT the best place for lead generation in MLM or Direct Selling.
Even during the peak of the pandemic, when many distributors rushed to take their business online, I held my ground on this. I experimented, failed, learned, and came to three solid conclusions.
Let’s get straight to them.
Negative Perception – Worse in Digital
Let’s do a quick Google or YouTube search on Direct Selling or MLM.
🔍 What do you see?
❌ Memes mocking MLM.
❌ Videos exposing “pyramid schemes.”
❌ Angry testimonials of people who failed and blamed the system.
👉 The reality is this:
The negative perception of Network Marketing is magnified online.
This is not a hidden issue—the skepticism surrounding MLM is public and easily searchable.
💡 During the pandemic, people became even more cautious.
Scammers were actively exploiting digital channels to sell false promises and fake get-rich-quick schemes.
Now imagine—
You show up digitally, promoting a business that already carries stigma.
❓ What do people think?
❗ That you’re “one of them.”
Even if you are genuine, even if your business is legitimate, the first impression is against you.
And if you already have a high follower count, this can damage your reputation.
🔹 What Should You Do Instead?
If you want to approach people digitally, do it one-on-one, not as a mass sales pitch.
Use digital content to educate, not to sell.
Build trust first, business later—focus on networking and credibility
You are competing against Brands
Most distributors think of social media as a free marketing tool.
They say, “I’ll just connect with my friends and relatives—maybe some will join me!”
But let’s step back for a moment.
💡 Social media is NOT just a casual networking space anymore.
It is a hyper-competitive battlefield where you are competing against the biggest brands in the world—for as little as 3 seconds of mindshare.
Let that sink in.
Even if you are simply posting about your business, you are fighting for attention against:
🔹 Multi-million-dollar ad campaigns
🔹 Professional marketers with deep audience insights
🔹 Algorithms designed to prioritize engagement, not sales
⚠️ So ask yourself—why are you choosing to fight a battle that you can’t win?
Biggest mistake? Treating social media like a direct response sales tool, instead of what it truly is—a brand-building platform.
🔹 What Should You Do Instead?
✅ Use social media for attraction marketing, not direct selling.
✅ Build curiosity with lifestyle content, achievements, and value-based content.
✅ Leverage personal conversations outside of social media to actually convert prospects.
Pushing on Pull Platforms
In marketing, there are two key strategies:
📌 Push Marketing – Where you actively promote and push products to people
📌 Pull Marketing – Where people come to you because of your reputation
Now, let’s apply this to social media.
💡 Social media is a “pull” platform.
People come to Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to be entertained, inspired, or informed—NOT to be sold to.
So when you push your business aggressively, it backfires.
👉 People see it as spam.
👉 They tune you out.
👉 Worst case, they unfollow or block you.
If you don’t believe me, think about this:
❓ When was the last time YOU bought something from a random distributor’s Facebook post?
❌ Probably never.
But…
✅ If a trusted friend spoke to you directly, shared their story, and personally invited you to explore a business, would you be more open? Yes.
That’s the difference.
🔹 What Should You Do Instead?
🚀 Use social media for brand positioning, not direct prospecting.
🚀 Let people be attracted to your achievements and lifestyle.
🚀 Engage in conversations, build trust, and take discussions OFFLINE for actual conversions.
Network Marketing is NOT an Instagram DMs game.
It is fueled by face-to-face interactions, trust, and relationship-building.
💰 The highest-paid distributors in the world don’t sell—they educate, empower, and build teams.
Instead of spamming your network, here’s the smarter way:
✅ Use digital to build your authority, not to sell aggressively.
✅ Leverage storytelling and attraction marketing to pull people in.
✅ Nurture relationships personally before pitching business.
That way, you are catching prospects in a frame of mind of doing business and then putting them at the top of the funnel hoping for a long-term relationship.
Social media feels like the easy way, but in reality, it creates more friction than trust.
💥 People make this mistake, damage their reputation, and then blame Direct Selling for ruining relationships.
Let’s be smarter.
Let’s build trust first.
